Whenever in search of GSM cell phones, be sure to find those you really need. While this bit of advice may seem so common-sensical as to be moronic, all too many folks wind up with stuff that don’t fit their needs all that well. Ironically enough, it may be that having so many options on the marketplace to choose from contributes to this situation: known to our Gallic friends as embarass de riches. That is, the cornucopia of choices out there seem to confuse people more than anything else.
Researchers of consumer psychology can attest to this finding. Whether it’s GSM cell phones or anything, really, people just have a harder time — and feel the attendant anxiety — when confronted (yes, “confronted!”) by too many choices. It may be surprising, but it’s not entirely counter-intuitive, if you think about it. Consider that about half of humanity — those typically called “guys” — don’t like shopping. Ever wonder why? Basically, instant gratification. They want to “get it over with.” This is the predominant feeling even if the purchase to be made is a simple affair, say something like buying soap or getting toothpaste. So just think how much more aggravating it is when something as complex as electronics is involved!
Now, of course, most guys like electronic gadgets — because guys like toys in general. They like objects they can manipulate. Yet today’s technology offers a bewildering array of capabilities, with feature-sets that no one but true geeks and nerds would really like to spend time studying…guys or gals.
That’s not even to mention the other half of the human race known as “girls!” These are people who often love to shop, but who find technology purchases none too interesting.
The existence of so many people who do not care about cell phones is an important fact. No wonder, isn’t it, that marketing hype is resorted to in order to hasten the purchase? Thus, not knowing the latest from the greatest, they sometimes wind up with gear they not only don’t need, but which may actually hamper their daily mobile communications!
So when in the market for a cell phone, a little introspection of sorts is in order. What exactly do you need to do with a handset anyway? Do you need to send audio-visual material? Must you have an on-board radio? Are games that important? Will you need WiFi capabilities as well, or would the data stream of your carrier’s cellular network suffice?
